Chapter 77 - Commission - Pet Portrait - Rueben - 2019

Updated: Jun 12, 2020

Rueben - A2 425gsm bockington Watercolour Paper

Rueben was a commission from my friend's family, it was a painting that would join the home of my pet portrait painting of Archie from 2018 and that is why this piece has the same coloured mark making as Archie's piece.

I think that this piece is still as high a standard as my painting of Archie, but naturally maybe slightly better because of the fact that my skills have come on quite alot over the time since that piece, not so much however that they look completely different. There are just little details within this painting that really make him pop, like the reflection in his eyes, when looking up close to the eyes, you can see what Rueben is looking at, and reflections like that is something that I have never done before and it does add that extra level of realism to the piece. I like the way that the fur has been faded out into the blue background by slowly thinning the hair out to individual strands, this style of working works very nicely with the pet portraits. Another part of this piece that stands out to me is his mouth. The gums, teeth and tongue look very realistic due to the few pops of white highlight to make everything look wet.

My friend's family were very happy with the painting and now both Archie and Rueben have matching frames.
