Chapter 68 - ArchieVerse - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Posters - Happy Birthday, Witch - 2019

Updated: Dec 29, 2020

Here is my poster design of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it is the simplest design and concept of my ArchieVerse Collection, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't thought out design.

I didn't want the poster to have alot of things going on like the Riverdale and Katy Keene posters as I wanted the colour palette and portrait of Sabrina itself to be the main focus. I chose to paint Sabrina in her birthday party/Dark Baptism dress because it is the outfit she wears when attending the Dark Baptism and the decision that she makes that night is very influential of what happens over the course of the rest of the series. A Dark Baptism is a supernatural ceremony that took place on October 31st, the night of Sabrina Spellman's 16th birthday. The ceremony is when a young witch would declare their devotion to the Dark Lord and therefore sacrificing their freedom for power. I also wanted Sabrina to be looking over her shoulder to give the impression that she is looking out to the audience for security/confirmation of her decision while on her way to the Dark Baptism.

Using the red mark making from the original portrait of Sabrina, I kept that on the poster as a way to tie back in with the portrait painting and as a way to keep the red branding from the show on the poster and to help frame Sabrina in the middle of the poster. I also wanted to have black mark making around the edges of the poster as a way of suggesting that the darkness is closing in on the young witch and also as a reflection of the dark tones of the show. I used a paint roller in the same way that I did for the Teen Choice Project because it creates a gritty texture and again, that matches the themes of the show.

Instead of redesigning the shows logo and the Netflix logo like I have done with the other ArchieVerse posters and most other poster designs in my portfolio, I decided to add the gritty roller paint texture to the logo designs from the show. I used brush typography alot within my work anyway, and seeing as the official logo from the show also uses brush typography, if I were to have made my own logo, it wouldn't have looked much different from that anyway so it seemed pointless.

I also added an illustration of a satanic symbol to the poster. I wanted it to be in a position that looked like that was the destination that Sabrina is walking towards. You could say that this poster design is sort of like a snapshot of a scene before Sabrina's Dark Baptism, so in reality, Sabrina would turn her head back around from looking back at us and keep walking forward, towards the satanic symbol. The satanic symbol is a direct link to the witch world and the Dark Lord.

Although this poster design is one of my simpler designs within my portfolio, it was still just as thought out as any other because of the use of colour, the narrative behind the portrait of Sabrina through her outfit choice and the way that she is looking back at the audience.

Just as I have done with the Riverdale and Katy Keene series, I wanted my Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to have a smaller design that would suit a postcard using the smaller supporting artwork. Just as described in my painting of Witching Hour, the candle represents how the witches cast spells more at the Witching Hour, midnight. The postcard just has a quote from one of the characters alongside the candle as a way to put a generic looking candle straight into the world of Sabrina.
