COLE SPROUSE - 'Jughead Jones' - 42 hours, 76x56cm acrylic painting on 425gsm Bockington Watercolour Paper
Jughead is probably the best from the Riverdale series overall. The likeness is the strongest, the background looks the best visually with the way it blends in with his body, the clothes are also very striking.
This painting marks the first time of working with leather. I wasn't sure of how to go about creating the rough/worn out texture and to be honest, i can't quite describe how I did it, it kind of just happened with the layering of paint by not blending it together. I was worried that it might look like the jacket is the main thing that you would look at, then Jughead, because the jacket is such a statement item. However, I think that because Jughead's likeness is so strong, the whole painting is balanced nicely and you see it just simply as Jughead wearing the jacket, rather than the jacket wearing Jughead, if that makes any sense. It is because of these reasons that I think that this painting will always be a milestone painting, it is just overall a really stunning piece to look at and is probably still one of my best in my portfolio to date.
This painting was really nice to work on, I didn't really come into too many issues with it, it was just the jacket that I was unsure of how to do. When working on it up close I wasn't sure I had done the jacket justice, but taking a photo of it and seeing it on a smaller scale allowed me to realise that actually, what I had done was surprisingly quite effective. Taking a step away from the painting and seeing it from a distance in this way is always helpful when I am struggling to see what an issue maybe.
