ASHLEIGH MURRAY - 'Josie McCoy' - 44 hours, 76x56cm acrylic painting on 425gsm Bockington Watercolour Paper

Josie McCoy marks the first painting of my Riverdale series. I wanted to work with the minor characters first and saving the main ones until the end so I should have the main characters at the best quality, seeing as my style would improve with each one.

This marks the first time for many techniques, the first time I had to work with a patterned outfit, the first time I had to work with this braid-like hairstyle, the first time of painting a black person. Working with these new skin tones was something that I struggled with alot in the beginning of the portrait as it was a completely different colour palette than what I was used to. I think the end result has worked really nicely and her skin looks really nicely blended. To create the braid hairstyle I just sort of dabbed and old dry brush in a pointillist style to get that new texture of hair. You can see in the developmental photos below how I painted the dress. I started by painting the yellow base which had the highlights and shadows creating Josie's figure. Then I just went over the top of the yellow with a small brush creating the black print.

Overall I did really enjoy working on this piece, there were a few things that I struggled with, mainly the skin tone and makeup, but that was easily fixed as I was working and I don't think I would change anything about this piece. Josie has turned out really nicely!
